Rare Hopkins & Allen 1889 Belgian Mauser Prototype

Recently acquired from a Connecticut estate is this near mint prototype of the Belgian contract 1889 Mauser rifle by Hopkins & Allen of nearby Norwich where the company was located. It had resided in a collection for over 60 years until it came to us. Aside from the numeral 5 ahead of the magazine and the normal rear sight it is unmarked. According to owner who had family connections to H&A, this gun was one of several prototypes produced to exhibit that the company could manufacture a rifle to the Belgian's standards.WWI brought critical arms shortages and Belgium contracted in 1915, for the manufacture of 140,000 Model 1889 rifles. H&A greatly underestimated the demand and cost of materials and labor in time of war and underbid the contract which ultimately led to its bankruptcy. These Mausers are easily identified by the “Hopkins and Allen Arms Co. Norwich, Conn. U.S.A.” marking on the receiver and most all were shipped overseas and saw hard service during WW1 and after. This specimen is in amazingly untouched condition with 99.99% original deep blue and wood showing just very minor storage marks. It shows no evidence of ever being fired.

"Just wanted to thank you for the courtesy you extended me and my friends.....(you) patiently examined my 1830-40 Pennsylvania rifle....explained condition...context of where in history the rifle fit in....and gave a very fair appraisal.....this was by far the friendly gun shop he had ever visited, bar none". ....Almost every other place....glances at weapon, names a price and moves on......Your establishment is "very customer friendly"...I will certainly return to visit you again"

We own and operate a retail store and gallery open Wednesday through Saturday with an extensive inventory. We offer free verbal appraisals to visitors and written appraisals for a fee for insurance purposes, estate liquidations, etc. We are members of the Appraisers Association of America.
